How to store an electric vehicle

Electric cars need a slightly different approach to storage because of the large high-voltage battery and the small 12V battery. Always check your manufacturer's guidance first.

Check the charge level

Many manufacturers advise leaving the battery at a partial charge for long storage, often somewhere between roughly 20 and 80 per cent, rather than fully charged or empty. Your handbook or app will give the recommendation for your model.

Charging while stored

  • Ask whether the facility has power points and allows charging.
  • If it does not, plan a check every few weeks, or choose a provider that offers EV care.
  • Do not leave the car on a high-power charger unattended in storage unless the facility allows it.

Look after the 12V battery

The small 12V battery that runs the car's systems can go flat even when the main battery is fine. Ask your dealer or the handbook about how it is kept charged, and whether you should connect a maintainer.

Temperature and location

Very hot or very cold conditions are harder on batteries. Indoor or climate-controlled storage helps, and it protects the paint and interior as well.

Safety and the facility

  • Ask the provider about their experience storing EVs and about fire protection.
  • Check their insurance and yours covers an EV in storage.
  • Make sure any charging is done safely, with the right equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I leave my EV plugged in while it is stored?

Some EVs can, some prefer not to. Follow the manufacturer's guidance and the facility's rules.

What charge should I leave in an electric car?

Many makers suggest a partial charge for long storage rather than full or empty. Check your handbook for the right range for your model.

Do all storage facilities take electric cars?

Not all. Ask about power access, fire protection and experience with EVs when you enquire.
